Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer can affect lips, cheek lining, gums, tongue, floor and roof of the mouth, and back toward the throat. Most oral cancer is caused by long-term use of tobacco and alcohol, or by the recently identified HPV-16 virus, also responsible for most cervical cancers in women. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF), “when found at early stages of development, oral cancers have an 80 to 90% survival rate. Unfortunately at this time, the majority are found as late stage cancers, and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 43% at five years from diagnosis.”
