Sedation Dentistry

For some people, a trip to the dentist can be an especially stressful time. Dental phobia, anxiety and fear of pain are not uncommon in dental patients. An estimated 15 percent of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. Unfortunately, these people allow dental fear and anxiety to keep them from receiving essential treatment and suffer from poor dental health and appearance as a result.

A good dental experience thanks to sedation dentistry

The good news is that dentistry is more advanced and more comfortable than ever, making it much easier to have a good experience at the dentist. For people who need help relaxing in the dentist chair, sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as “relaxation dentistry,” “sleep dentistry” or “anxiety free dentistry,” is available at Gallery Dental Arts in Beverly Hills. Dr. Boyajian has been specially trained to administer sedation to help patients feel calm, creating a safe, comfortable and positive dental experience.

Types of dental sedation medications

Dental sedation medications have been subjected to rigorous study to ensure safety and effectiveness. The three most common forms of sedation for typical dental procedures are:

  • Oral sedation. Taken the night before or the day of the appointment, oral sedatives take the edge off and allow patients to be relaxed and aware, but are not for pain management.
  • Nitrous oxide. “Laughing gas” or “happy gas” is inhaled through a mask. Patients are pleasantly relaxed while being aware of what is happening around them, and a local anesthetic is used to eliminate pain. The gas leaves the system in just a few minutes, making it safe for the patient to drive and resume their day without limitation.
  • IV sedation. This effective, safe method, normally monitored by an anesthesiologist, causes little or no discomfort and often little or no memory of the procedure. Patients will need someone to drive them home and be with them for up to six hours after the procedure as the drugs leave their system.

None of these three forms of sedation involve being put to sleep. For more complex procedures, general anesthesia drugs that cause temporary loss of consciousness are used.
