Veneers are an easy and long-lasting way to improve both the appearance and functionality of your teeth. This shell or layer of porcelain or composite resin is bonded to the surface of the tooth to give you the smile you desire without more extensive restorative or cosmetic treatments. Some dental problems cannot be solved with veneers, but in the right situations, veneers can give you the smile you’ve desired.
Veneers solve a number of problems
By covering the tooth with strong, stain-resistant porcelain or resin veneer shells, you can solve a number of problems including:
- Large gaps between teeth
- Worn, chipped or broken teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Misaligned or uneven teeth
In instances where a veneer can be used instead of a crown, the veneer is durable alternative that allows much more of the tooth structure to be saved.
Prepping your tooth for veneer Veneers are very thin, so only a very thin layer of the tooth’s enamel needs be removed. This will make treated tooth the same size as the original when the veneer is applied. Some of the newer veneers, such as Lumineers, require minimal to no prep. To eliminate any chance of discomfort while preparing your tooth, a local anesthetic may be used. At your first of two veneer visits, Dr. Boyajian will make a model of the tooth to be sent to a lab to create the perfectly fitted veneer. He’ll make sure the tooth color is perfectly matched to your surrounding teeth for a natural look. When you return, the veneer will be bonded to your tooth with a special, strong adhesive for a durable, long-lasting fit.
Maintaining your veneers Some beverages such as coffee, cola, tea and red wine may stain or discolor your veneers, so you should avoid these for the best long-term results. Veneers should last for many years, but just like your natural teeth, they can chip or break. Small chips can be repaired; for larger chips or breaks, a new veneer may be needed.
